Ayitian President Jovenel Moïse was assassinated after a group of unidentified group of gunmen  attacked his private residence, the country’s interim prime minister confirmed in a statement Wednesday, July 7

Ayititi declared a two-week state of emergency on Wednesday as it hunts for the gunmen who killed president Jovenel Moïse in Port-au-Prince, and the interim prime minister now in charge of the country urged Ayitians to “remain calm because the situation is under control.” Little is known about the suspects, but a special issue of Haiti’s government gazette claimed that they appear to have been foreigners.

As officials investigate Moïse’s assassination, Haiti is in a “state of emergency.” All borders are closed, and martial law has been imposed. The Ayiti National Police and the country’s military have been deployed to enforce the law.
